Performs tests and assists in analysis of materials, processes and equipment. Participates in test development, assists in routine analysis of failed parts and processes, generates data to aid in the evaluation of the failure mechanism and documents findings. Assists in developing and revising documents and technical requirements. Participates in the evaluation and qualification of materials, suppliers, equipment, technology and processes to ensure that conformance and producibility requirements are met. Supports continuous improvement of products and processes by participating in the design, fabrication and testing of new concepts and technology.

The Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T) organization is seeking a Materials & Processes Laboratory Technician (Level 2) to join the Specialty Materials and Integration team in Seattle, WA.

SMI is a section of Materials & Manufacturing Technology, all within Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T). BR&T’s scope of work spans initial concept to feasibility/development to production implementation and support. Customers include all other divisions of Boeing, US DoD (Department of Defense), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and other organizations.

SMI is a microcosm of BR&T but with higher focus on concept generation, feasibility and technology development and maturation. We provide breadth and depth of knowledge and capabilities to help internal and external customers: with efforts spanning “clean sheet” design to correcting existing problems; to win contracts; to succeed.

SMI has earned a reputation within Boeing as a go-to organization for fast development of innovative materials and processes. Our hands-on approach to development is enabled by our Advanced Materials, Advanced Development and Laser laboratories. Engineers work side-by-side with experienced and capable technicians in these labs to create a broad range of new products and capabilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

Your duties as an SM&I Mechanical Laboratory Technician will include (but are not limited to):

• Conducting research, tests and analysis to support the development of new materials and devices

• Reading and following test plans

• Troubleshooting processes to identify issues and improvements

• Mixing, injecting, and testing new resin formulations

• Coordinating testing of coupons

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced education (e.g. Associate) and typically 1 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. Bachelor, 3 years' related work experience, etc.).

Basic Qualifications (Required):

• Experience in a developmental laboratory environment or similar experience

• Ability to perform multiple diverse tasks with minimal direct supervision

• High attention to detail

• Ability to work in a team environment and independently to accomplish the goals of the group

• Ability to listen and communicate effectively and write clearly and concisely

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ability to combine technical knowledge with creative thinking and resourcefulness to identify viable solutions to complex problems

• Experience developing processes.

• Familiarity with chemical processes (accurately measuring and mixing polymer formulations)

Work Authorization:

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.
